ALBERTA ROBERTS

Alberta Sturgeon Roberts, 94, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, in Montpelier, Idaho. She was a charter member of Mountain States Lamb Cooperative, attended our annual meeting two years ago at 92, and kept up on Co-op activities and news.  Mrs. Roberts was born Feb. 24, 1917, in Snyder, Texas, the daughter of Lula and Warren Sturgeon.  She graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a degree in English, moved to Rock Springs and began her teaching career.  She married Lou Roberts and had two children, LouAnn and Fred.  They were all partners in the Roberts Ranch, a sheep and cattle ranch in southwestern Wyoming.  Mrs. Roberts remained an active member in the ranching operation until her death.  She is survived by her two children, LouAnn and husband Mark Rowan of Meridian, Idaho, and Fred of Cokeville; and three grandchildren, Lacey, Kyle and Patrick. The Mountain States Lamb Cooperative family extends our condolences to Fred, LouAnn and their families.

Mountain State Lamb Cooperative declares $3.00 dividend

The MSLC Board of Directors declared a $3.00 dividend on lambs delivered in 2010.  Twenty percent of the amount was paid in cash during September with the remainder credited to the individual retained patronage accounts of MSLC members.  Since inception, Mountain States Lamb Cooperative has returned more than $3.1 million in patronage dividends to its members.

Delivery shares, which have been filled every year, have earned a total of $14.32 since 2003.  In addition, the book value of member shares has increased from $20 per share to $37.73 at the close of fiscal 2010.  This represents a total return of 160% on the purchase price in addition to the benefits of market access, grid and natural premiums our members enjoy.

A key to the continued success of Mountain States Lamb, Mountain States Rosen and our producers is volume.  When all A shares are filled everyone benefits- MSLC and MSR’s financial performance improves,  debt is paid down, patronage distributions increase and shares trade much closer to their market value.

Thank you to the many producers that have faithfully met their commitment year after year.  We must continue to strive as an organization to increase the total delivery each year.

2011 Annual Meeting

The MSLC 9th annual meeting held during July, in Colorado, was well attended.  Members celebrated 2 million lambs marketed through the Co-op. Bart and Patty Argyle of Argyle Ranch, Randolph, Utah received a beautiful pelt and plaque donated by Nugget International for sending the 2 millionth lamb through the Co-op.  Members also celebrated record lamb prices and received updates on the performance of their cooperative and meat company.

The MSR sales team made a very informative sales presentation and fielded questions from the membership.  Sales and marketing personnel from Greeley, New York and the West Coast participated.  The group also toured JBS, MSR and Nugget operations in Greeley.  Double J Feeders and the Hasbrouck family hosted a delightful BBQ for the group following the tour.

Premier Lamb Feeders

The new feeding alliance named Premier Lamb Feeders was introduced to the membership at the annual meeting.  Following the annual meeting, an information packet was sent to the membership.

Initial response has been very good and the first load of Premier Lambs will be harvested next week.

Premier offers another option for members to fill shares and reduce their feeding risks. Members made a $40 per slot deposit, which is matched by MSR for each share they want filled.  Lambs are purchased and the remaining financing is provided by CoBank at an exceptionally competitive rate. When the lambs are harvested the carcasses are marketed to MSR at the regular price that week.  Any gain or loss is split 50% with MSR.  Members receive full settlement information when the last lamb in that particular pool is harvested.  If there is a gain, the member receives a check for their deposit plus 50% of the gain.  If the pool of lambs loses money, the loss is deducted from the deposit and any excess deposit refunded.  If the lambs lose more than the $80 in deposits per head from MSR and the producer, MSR and the producer will be billed pro rata for that difference.

Premier purchases and manages the lambs for a $1 per head administrative fee.  Again all costs and income are divided pro rata on a per head basis between the producers and MSR.

If you have questions about Premier Lamb Feeders please give us a call.

Producer Pictures and Stories

Mountain States Rosen needs more pictures and stories of our co-op families.  Pictures of your family, landscape, and sheep are all needed.  We will also be creating some short producer videos.  If you have pictures that you think might be suitable to use in marketing materials please email them to becky@mslamb.com.  If you have questions give us a call.

As requested by several of our members, here again is Valley River Inn chef Michael Thieme’s recipe for the delicious shanks served at our 2006 annual meeting. We have featured shanks several times since at annual meetings and they are always a crowd favorite.

Lamb Osso Bucco

  • 6 – 10 oz lamb shanks (cross cut 1.5 inches thick)
  • 2 quarts beef stock
  • 2 cups tomatoes, diced
  • 1 cup diced onions
  • 6 oz tomato paste
  • 12 oz red wine i.e. Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 2 tbsp chopped garlic
  • ½ tsp thyme
  • ½ tsp oregano
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • Flour
  • olive oil for browning the shanks

Procedure:

Flour the shanks. Using a large shallow pan, over medium high heat, add oil and brown the shanks to a golden color on all sides. Set aside. Add a little more oil, reduce heat and sauté the onions until translucent, add garlic and diced onions. Let the tomatoes come to a simmer, add the wine let cook until the wine is reduced by half. Add the beef stock, thyme, oregano, and tomato paste. Stir together until well mixed. Add the shanks, bring back to a simmer, reduce to low and cover. Simmer at low heat for approximately 1 1/2 hours or until fork tender. Turn the shanks periodically throughout the cooking process. If the cooking liquid should reduce too much add a little water to bring it back. Once the shanks are done remove from pan reduce the sauce until desired consistency pour sauce over the shanks and serve.
