Mountain Meadow Wool

Mountain States Lamb Coop has agreed to participate with Mountain Meadow Wool Mill in a USDA SBIR funded research project. Mountain States is asking its Wyoming members to provide up to 50,000 pounds of greasy wool for Mountain Meadow Wool Mill located in Buffalo, Wyoming.  This wool will supply the raw material to test an innovative marketing model developed by Mountain Meadow Wool.  This model is intended to provide producers with a greater profit when they retain ownership further into the wool supply chain.   Your wool will be put through the Mill, and converted into yarn and you will receive payment when the yarn is sold.  The goal is to return 10% of the retail price back to the producer.  The Mountain Meadow Wool believes that Mountain States members produce some of the best wool in the world and they should benefit directly from its sale to consumers.

For this year we are looking for wool with a 21-24 micron range with a 10% variation on either side and a fiber length of 70-80mm which translates to 2.75-3.15 inches.  We also are looking at yield of 50-51%.  A higher yield would be ideal.

From 10 lbs of greasy wool, Mountain Meadow expects to produce 4-5 lbs of yarn. Currently it appears that amount of yarn would return $16-$20 to the producer.  This translates into $1.60 to $2.00 per /lb of greasy wool. The final return will of course depend on the yield of the wool, vegetable matter, etc.  If the overall yield is higher, the grower will directly benefit.

Producers interested in supplying wool to Mountain Meadows would be responsible for delivery and should contact them directly at 307-684-5775.

Mountain States Lamb Cooperative wants to encourage our members in the area to provide wool to this project.  The Mountain Meadows Wool Mill has the potential to greatly impact the Wool Industry in Wyoming. Currently, the higher grade of wool produced in the Rocky Mountain area is shipped to out of state mills and mixed with wool of much lesser quality.  By using only top quality wool, Mountain Meadows hopes to market a premium product and return more of the true value of the wool to the pockets of producers.
